ABSTRACT

Abstract Proanthocyanidin (PA) is a promising dentin biomodifier due to its ability to stabilize collagen fibrils against degradation by matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs); however, the most effective protocol to incorporate PA into bonding procedures is still unclear. This study evaluated the effect of dentin biomodification with a PA acid etchant on MMP activity, adhesive interface morphology and resin-dentin microtensile bond strength. Sound extracted human molars were flattened to expose dentin and acid-etched for 15 s according to the groups: EXP - experimental phosphoric acid; EXP+PA - experimental phosphoric acid 10% PA; TE - total-etching system; SE - self-etching system. Samples were restored with composite resin and stored in distilled water (37ºC). MMP activity and interface morphology were analyzed after 24 h by in situ zymography (n=6) and scanning electron microscopy (n=3), respectively. The resin-dentin microtensile bond strength (μTBS) was evaluated after 24 h and 6 months storage (n=6). Significantly higher MMP activity was detected in etched dentin compared with untreated dentin (p<0.05), but no difference among acid groups was found. Resin tags and microtags, indicative of proper adhesive system penetration in dentinal tubules and microtubules, were observed along the hybrid layer in all groups. There was no difference in μTBS between 24 h and 6 months for EXP+PA; moreover, it showed higher long-term μTBS compared with TE and EXP (p<0.05). The results suggest that 15 s of biomodification was not sufficient to significantly reduce MMP activity; nonetheless, EXP+PA was still able to improve resin-dentin bond stability compared with total- and self-etching commercial systems.


Resumo A proantocianidina (PA) é um biomodificador dentinário promissor devido a sua capacidade de estabilizar as fibrilas colágenas contra a degradação por metaloproteinases da matriz (MMPs); no entanto, o protocolo mais eficaz para a incorporação de PA em procedimentos adesivos ainda não está claro. Este estudo avaliou o efeito da biomodificação da dentina com um condicionador ácido contendo PA na atividade de MMPs, morfologia da interface adesiva e resistência à microtração resina-dentina. Molares humanos extraídos foram lixados para exposição da dentina e condicionados com ácido por 15 s de acordo com os grupos: EXP - ácido fosfórico experimental; EXP+PA - ácido fosfórico experimental com 10% PA; TE - sistema total-etch; SE - sistema self-etch. As amostras foram restauradas com resina composta e armazenadas em água destilada (37ºC). A atividade de MMP e morfologia da interface foram analisadas após 24 h por zimografia in situ (n=6) e microscopia eletrônica de varredura (n=3), respectivamente. A resistência à microtração resina-dentina (μTBS) foi avaliada após 24 horas e 6 meses de armazenamento (n=6). Atividade de MMP detectada na dentina condicionada foi significativamente maior em comparação com a dentina não tratada (p <0,05), mas não houve diferenças entre os diferentes ácidos. Tags e microtags de resina, indicativos de uma penetração adequada do sistema adesivo nos túbulos e microtúbulos dentinários, foram observadas ao longo da camada híbrida em todos os grupos. Não houve diferença entre os valores de μTBS de 24 h e 6 meses para EXP+PA; além disso, EXP+PA apresentou maiores valores de μTBS após 6 meses em comparação com TE e EXP (p <0,05). Os resultados sugerem que a biomodificação por 15 s não foi suficiente para reduzir significativamente a atividade de MMP; apesar disso, EXP + PA foi capaz de melhorar a estabilidade da interface resina-dentina em comparação com sistemas total- e self-etch comerciais.

ABSTRACT

Context: A promising option for the prevention of dental caries is the use of laser irradiation. Aims: Evaluate the effects of Er:YAG, Nd:YAG, and CO2 laser irradiation, associated or not to 2% sodium fluoride (2% NaF), on root caries prevention. Material and Methods: One hundred and four human root dentin samples were divided in eight groups (n = 13). A 9?mm2?area on each dentin sample was delimited and treated as follows: G1: no treatment (control); G2: 2% NaF; G3: Er:YAG; G4: 2% NaF + Er:YAG; G5: Nd:YAG; G6: 2% NaF + Nd:YAG; G7: CO2; G8: 2% NaF + CO2. When used, the 2% NaF was applied before irradiation for 4 min. The samples were subjected to a 2?week cariogenic challenge, consisted of daily immersion in de?remineralizing solutions for 6 h and 18 h, respectively. Knoop hardness (KHN) were evaluated (10 g and 20 s) at different depths from the dentin surface. The samples (n = 3) were prepared for scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Microhardness data were analysed by one?way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Fisher’s test (? = 5%). Results: The Er:YAG laser group (KHN = 41.30) promoted an increase in acid resistance of the dentin (P < 0.05) when compared to all groups. There was no synergism between laser irradiation and 2% NaF application. Morphological changes were observed after irradiation with all lasers; carbonization and cracks were also observed, except when Er:YAG were used. Conclusions: Er:YAG laser irradiation can safely increase the acid resistance of the dentin surface of the root, since it promoted a significant increase in surface hardness. The application of 2% NaF did not result in a synergistic effect

ABSTRACT: Equine leukoencephalomalacia (LEM) is a disease caused by the ingestion of food, especially corn, contaminated by fumonisin, a Fusarium verticillioides (synonymous with F. moniliforme) metabolite. The clinical signs of brain injuries have an acute onset and rapid evolution. This study aimed to describe the clinical findings in 11 animals diagnosed with LEM, including cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis. Of these animals, 91% (10/11) were horses, and only 9% (1/11) were asinine. The clinical localization of the lesions was 64% (7/10) cerebral, manifested mainly by altered mental state and behavioral disturbance, and 36% (4/11) were brainstem lesions, manifested by incoordination, head tilt, nystagmus, facial hypoalgesia, difficulty in apprehension, chewing, and swallowing food. Postmortem findings revealed that 82% (9/11) of the lesions were in the cerebrum and 18% (2/11) in the brainstem. CSF findings, such as xanthochromia (43%, 3/7), hyperproteinorrachia (50%, 3/6), and pleocytosis (43%, 3/7) were observed. The affected animals showed neurological signs that were compatible with cerebral and/or brainstem injuries. The CSF from animals with LEM may present with xanthochromia, hyperproteinorrachia, and pleocytosis, reinforcing the fact that this disease should be included in the differential diagnosis of encephalomyelopathies.

Os sinais clínicos apresentam início agudo e evolução rápida e são decorrentes de lesões encefálicas. O objetivo deste estudo é descrever os achados clínicos de 11 equídeos diagnosticados com LEM, incluindo a análise do líquido cefalorraquidiano (LCR). 91% dos animais afetados eram equinos e somente 9% (1/11) era asinino. A localização clínica das lesões era 64% (7/10) cerebrais, manifestadas por alterações no estado mental e comportamento e 36% (4/10) no tronco encefálico, manifestadas por incoordenação, desvio lateral de cabeça, nistagmo, hipoalgesia da face e dificuldade de apreensão, mastigação e deglutição de alimentos. Comparativamente, os achados post mortem revelaram que 82% (9/11) das lesões eram no cérebro e 18% (2/11) no tronco encefálico. Alterações no LCR, tais como xantocromia (43%, 3/7), hiperproteinorraquia (50%, 3/6) e pleocitose (43%, 3/7), foram observadas. ABSTRACT

The intra-articular use of hyaluronic acid (HA) for the treatment of synovitis and osteoarthritis is still controversial. As a consequence, corticosteroids remain the most frequently employed therapeutic agents, despite their potential systemic and local deleterious effects. This study examined the anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and chondroprotective activities of low and high molecular weight hyaluronic acid (LMW-HA and HMW-HA) on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced synovitis in horses compared to triamcinolone acetonide (TA). LPS was injected in the metacarpophalangeal joints, which were treated intra-articularly with either TA (as control) or LMW-HA or HMW-HA. Joint clinical evaluation and synovial fluid (SF) analysis were performed at 0, 8, 24, and 48 h. The white blood cell counts (WBC), prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), interleukin (IL)-1, IL-6, IL-10, tumor necrosis factor-α, chondroitin sulfate (CS) and HA concentrations, oxidative burst, and HA molecular weights were measured. TA reduced the lameness, swelling, and PGE2 release but increased the SF CS concentrations enormously at 24h and 48h, and decreased the SF HA modal molecular weight. These results indicate the breakdown of articular cartilage aggrecan and SF HA. In contrast, LMW-HA and HMW-HA were less effective in reducing the inflammation symptoms, but preserved the joints because only a modest increase in CS occurred at 24 h, decreasing at 48 h, and the SF HA was maintained. The HA-treatment also had anti-inflammatory actions, and LMW-HA was the most effective in reducing the release of cytokine. In summary, the HA treatment inhibited efficiently the digestion of cartilage proteoglycans and SF HA breakdown.

ABSTRACT

Paddy cultivation is one of the widely planted crop in Malaysia. The growth of agricultural activity leads to the use of Organophosphate pesticide to protect the crop. This study is to determine the relationshi p between the levels of blood cholinesterase with the performance of motor coordination of children living in paddy farming area in Tanjung Karang, Selangor. This cross sectional study was conducted among 683 children from four schools in an agricultural area. Majority of the children have at a family member worked as farmer and was involved with pesticides. A set of questionnaire on the was given to the children to be filled by t heir parents. To measure their exposure to pesticide, blood cholinesterase levels were measured. Blood samples were taken through finger prick technique and were then analysed using LOVIBOND 412870 AF287. The children were administered with motor - coordina tion performance test using WHO Neurobehavioral Core Test Battery and McCarthy Learning Ability Scale. Young group children (6 - 85 years) showed a mean score of 56.66 in motor - coordination test while older group children (10 - 11)= years) scored a mean of 45 .37. There was a significant relationship between blood cholinesterase level and motor coordination performance among the young - group children (r=0.215, p<0.001) and the older - group children (r=0.106, p=0.049). Based on the Linear Regression test results, total household income of family, and mode of transport used were found to have significant relationship with blood cholinesterase level of children in both groups. In addition, blood cholinesterase level and mothers’ occupation were found to have signific ant relationship with the motor - coordination performance of all children.

Indoor air quality (IAQ) has become a major concern nowadays because of the universality of exposure and its potential negative impact on human health especially on children. This study is intended to explore the association between IAQ and the respiratory health among preschool children in urban and suburban area. A cross-sectional comparative study was carried out among Malay preschool children in urban (N= 60, Puchong) and suburban (N=60, Hulu Langat) areas. An indoor air quality assessment was conducted in 12 preschools and 60 houses which include parameters of PM2.5, PM10, VOCs, mold, bacteria, Gram-negative bacteria and physical parameters. A set of standardized questionnaire was distributed to obtain respondents’ background information, exposure history and respiratory health symptoms. Spirometry test was carried out and the data obtained were analyzed to determine the lung function of the respondents. There was a significant difference between IAQ in urban and suburban preschools for all parameters measured (p<0.05). Most of the pollutants were significantly associated with respiratory health symptoms. There was a significant association between the level of indoor pollutants with the lung function abnormalities among the respondents. Even though this study is the first to take Gram-negative bacteria as an indoor air pollutant, the finding also shows that there is a significant association between exposure of Gram-negative bacteria with lung function impairment and higher reported respiratory symptoms among the respondents. The finding concluded that exposures to indoor air pollutants, especially PM2.5 increases the risk of getting lung function abnormality and respiratory health symptoms among respondents.

Background: Benzene is primarily routed by inhalation which highly sensitive to blood parameters as bone marrow is their target organ. The ability of benzene even in low exposure levels may induce human bone marrow suppression resulting in blood diseases such as leukopenia, anemia, thrombocytopenia, aplastic anemia, and pancytopenia. In the occupational setting, the most common benzene-exposed workers are from the petrochemical industries and petrol distribution such as gasoline pumps. Benzene also generated primarily by mobile exhaust and some from various of anthropogenic sources at environmental atmosphere and occupationally exposed in the policemen traffic, taxi and bus drivers, and street vendors in long-length time with low concentration exposure. Methodology: This paper reviewed published articles on biomarkers exposure, effects and susceptibility as the useful tools for benzene exposure assessment in the occupational and environ-mental setting. Data from previous epidemiological studies relevant to benzene exposure in various occupational and en-vironmental setting is also summarized. Results: Based on these analyses, the findings agreed that these biomarkers are could suggest in linking the benzene exposure with possible adverse health effects. The biological monitoring used in epi-demiological studies is useful in providing an understanding of activation and detoxification of benzene in both the occu-pational and general population as they are exposed to wide range of benzene concentration. Conclusion. The biomarkers of exposure, effects, and susceptibility utilized for benzene exposure assessment are valid tools in determining the greatest potential risk as well as an early biological effect which then caused a related specific disease.

This study was done to determine the relationship between indoor air quality and Sick Building Syndrome (SBS) among students in Retrofitting Building (Building A) located in Kuala Lumpur and Purposed-built Building (Building B) located in Selangor. A cross sectional study was conducted among student from selected buildings with the total number of 130 respondents. Modified questionnaire based on Indoor Air Quality and Work Symptoms Survey, NIOSH, Indoor Environmental Quality Survey, 1991 was used to record the number of students experienced SBS. Measurement of indoor air quality was performed using instruments recommended by the IAQ Code of Practice, Department of Occupational Safety and Health, Malaysia. There was a significantly higher number of occupants experienced SBS in Building A (60 of 65 respondents) compared to Building B (50 of 65 respondents) (Χ 2 = 4.127, p = 0.042). It was also found that there is a significant difference between the numbers of respondents having SBS between Building A and Building B (p < 0.045). Building A had higher CO2, bacteria, fungi, and UFP significantly as compared to Building B. However, only CO was significantly higher in Building B compared to Building A. It is suggested thatregular maintenance of both buildings is compulsory as ventilation played an important role in maintaining good indoor air quality in a building.

Background: The global use of mobile devices with their connectivity capacity; and integrated with the affordances of social media networks; provides a resource-rich platform for innovative student-directed learning experiences.Objective: The objective of this study was to review the experiences of undergraduate nurses on the improvement of primary health care education at a School of Nursing at a University in the Western Cape; South Africa; through the incorporation of a social media application; WhatsApp.Method: A qualitative; exploratory; descriptive; and contextual design was used to explore and describe data collected from a purposive sample of 21 undergraduate nursing students. The study population was engaged in a WhatsApp discussion group to enhance their integration of theory and clinical practice of the health assessment competency of the Primary Health Care Module. Participants submitted electronic reflections on their experiences in the WhatsApp discussion group via email on completion of the study. Thematic analysis of the qualitative data collected was done according to Tesch's (1990) steps of descriptive data analysis in order to identify the major themes in the study. The electronic reflections were analysed to explore their rich; reflective data.Results: Seven themes were identified that included: positive experiences using the WhatsApp group; the usefulness of WhatsApp for integrating theory and clinical practice; the availability of resources for test preparation; opportunity for clarification; anonymity; exclusion of students as a result of the lack of an appropriate device; and the application caused the battery of the device to run flat quickly.Conclusion: The results of the experiences of students in the WhatsApp discussion group could be used to inform the use of social media applications in teaching and learning; with the purpose of enhancing the integration of the theory and clinical practice

ABSTRACT

Background: Promoting the quality and effectiveness of nursing education is an important factor; given the increased demand for nursing professionals. It is important to establish learning environments that provide personalised guidance and feedback to students about their practical skills and application of their theoretical knowledge. Objective: To explore and describe the knowledge and points of view of students and educators about introduction of new technologies into an undergraduate nursing programme. Method: The qualitative design used Tesch's (1990) steps of descriptive data analysis to complete thematic analysis of the data collected in focus group discussions (FGDs) andindividual interviews to identify themes.Results: Themes identified from the students' FGDs and individual interviews included:mobile devices as a communication tool; email; WhatsApp and Facebook as methods of communication; WhatsApp as a method of communication; nurses as role-models in the clinical setting; setting personal boundaries; and impact of mobile devices in clinical practice on professionalism. Themes identified from the FGD; individual interviews and a discussion session held with educators included: peer learning via mobile devices; email; WhatsApp and Facebook as methods of communication; the mobile device as a positive learning method; students need practical guidance; and ethical concerns in clinical facilities about Internet access and use of mobile devices.Conclusion: The research project established an understanding of the knowledge and points of view of students and educators regarding introduction of new technologies into an undergraduate nursing programme with the aim of enhancing integration of theory and clinical practice through use of mobile devices

ABSTRACT

This experimental controlled study was performed to evaluate the composition of autologous processed plasma (APP), and the effects of APP intra-articular injection into healthy equine metacarpophalangeal joints. The effects on joints were analysed with a short-phase protocol and a prolonged-phase protocol using saline-injected joints as controls. For the short protocol, horses received one intra-articular APP injection. Synovial fluid samples were collected prior to the injection and 3, 6, 24, 48, and 16 h after treatment. For the prolonged protocol, the joints received three weekly injections of APP, and samples were collected at 0, 7, 14, 21, and 28 days before APP administration. IL1-ra level was found to be increased in APP compared to plasma. Upon intra-articular administration of APP, transient (up to 24 h) increases in white blood cell (WBC) counts along with elevated protein and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) concentrations were observed in the treated joints. Over the 28-day observation period, APP did not elicit changes relative to baseline levels, but WBC counts, PGE2 and chondroitin sulphate concentrations were lower than those found in the control. In conclusion, APP intra-articular injection induced a mild and transitory inflammatory response but no inflammation reaction was observed over a longer period of treatment and observation.

ABSTRACT

<p><b>INTRODUCTION</b>Traditional Chinese Medicine or Traditional Complementary Medicine (TCM) is commonly used in our culture. There are several concerns regarding its use in patients undergoing conventional treatments for breast cancer. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the prevalence and pattern of TCM use among our breast cancer patients, and to identify patients who were most likely to choose TCM.</p><p><b>MATERIALS AND METHODS</b>A total of 300 patients on active follow-up with Breast Service at Tan Tock Seng Hospital were interviewed using a structured questionnaire.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>A total of 35% (104 of 296) of patients reported using TCM. The majority of the patients were introduced to TCM by family and friends following the diagnosis of breast cancer. All except 3 patients continued with recommended conventional therapy although most did not inform their clinicians of TCM use. None of the patients reported any serious adverse events and 75% of them perceived a benefit from TCM use. Younger patients and those of Chinese ethnicity were more likely to use TCM (P <0.01 and P = 0.03 respectively). There was no significant difference in the dialect group, religious beliefs and educational level between the 2 groups (P >0.05).</p><p><b>CONCLUSION</b>TCM use is common among our breast cancer patients, particularly the younger women. However, most patients do not inform their clinicians of TCM use while on recommended conventional therapies. It is therefore important for clinicians to initiate discussions regarding TCM use in order to be aware of potential unwanted drug interactions.</p>

ABSTRACT

Primary endocrine therapy (PET) is often included as a treatment option in elderly women with operable breast cancer. Elderly women tend to have pre-existing comorbidities and are often reluctant to undergo surgery. The benefit of surgery needs to be weighed against a relatively higher potential for operative morbidity and mortality, and a limited life expectancy. But while PET can provide relatively good locoregional control, it is not curative in nature and the possibility of local complications and metastasis remains. We retrospectively reviewed the outcome of PET in a series of 19 elderly women, older than 70 years of age, who had presented with operable non-metastatic breast cancer. Only about a third of these women were deemed medically unfit for surgery; the rest had declined surgery. Compliance was an issue, with almost half of these patients defaulting treatment and follow-up. Local control was achieved in most patients, but disease progression did occur in 5 patients. Three of these patients received additional treatment; which included surgery in 1 patient. PET should therefore not be considered an equivalent alternative to surgery in elderly women who were fi t to undergo surgery. However, having observed that only 1 of the 6 deaths in our study was related to breast cancer, PET does have a role in women whose life expectancy is more likely to be limited by coexisting morbidities than the breast cancer itself.

ABSTRACT

Effective management of cancer pain is often hampered by patients’ lack of knowledge regarding cancer pain management and other barriers related to ethnicity and religious beliefs. This cross sectional study was performed to determine the patient-related barriers to effective cancer pain management. One hundred patients receiving cancer pain management were studied. Inclusion criteria were: patients over the age of 18 years, able to communicate, with known diagnosis of cancer, experiencing persistent pain for the past two weeks. A modified version of the Barriers Questionnaire II (BQ-II) was used and a modified Brief Pain Inventory was used to assess the pain profile. Barriers such as, patient’s attitude and beliefs, communication skills and fear of side effects of pain medication were determined, given a score and the summation was recorded as the total patient related barriers score. Overall, 85% of respondents achieved more than 40% pain relief and the 72 of 100 patients reported low patient related barrier scores of 6 or less. Nevertheless, the main patient related barriers were: fear of tolerance to opioids (51%), ethnicity (p=0.003) and religious beliefs (p=0.002) which constituted the major components of the patient-related barriers score. Ethnicity and religious beliefs had significant influence on patient-related barriers score suggesting the need of further investigation into this area. In order to achieve a comprehensive view, other barriers to effective cancer pain management such as those related to the health systems and healthcare providers need to be assessed together.

ABSTRACT

The present study aims at investigating the physiological response and technical-tactical parameters in Brazilian jiu-jitsu competition. The study included 35 male Brazilian jiu-jitsu athletes [adult category, body mass: 80.2 +/- 13.0 kg], graded from white to brown belt, during combats fought at regional level. Twenty-two fights were analyzed in terms of technique and time structure. Blood glucose, lactatc and maximal isometric grip strength were determined before and alter the fighrs. The rale of perceived exertion was also assessed after the tight, using the 6-20 Borg rating. The fight were recorded and the following variables were determined: the exertion/pause ratio and subjective intensity of actions, categorized between low and high intensity. The results indicated that during Brazilian jiu-jitsu fights, the gtyeoiytic pathway is only moderately activated [lactate before: 4.4 [4.0 - 4.6] mmol/L, after: 10.1 [8.0 - 11.3] mmol/L; glucose before: 112.4 +/- 22.3 mg/dL, after: 130.5 +/- 31.0 mg/dL]. The exertion during the fight resulted in significant reductions in handgrip strength [right hand grip before: 45.9 +/- 10.3 kgf, after: 40.1 +/- 9.5 kgf; left hand grip before: 44.2 +/- 11.1 kgf, after: 37.0 +/- 10.2 kgf]. The athletes rated the fight as hard: 15 [13 - 15]. Effort/pause ratio was 6:1, while high-intensity actions lasted approximately 4 [s], resulting in a low/high intensity? ratio of 8:1. It is recommended that coaches direct the training loads to simulate the energy demand imposed by the competitive matches, activating moderately the glycolytic pathway. Moreover, the time structure of combats can be used to prescribe both physical and technical-tactical training

ABSTRACT

We investigated the effects of progesterone and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) on survival and growth of caprine preantral follicles. Pieces of ovarian tissue were cultured for 1 or 7 days in minimum essential medium (MEM) alone or containing progesterone (1, 2.5, 5, 10 or 20ng/mL), FSH (50ng/mL) or the interaction between progesterone and FSH. Fresh (non-cultured control) and cultured ovarian tissues were processed for histological and ultrastructural studies. After 7 days the addition of FSH to all progesterone concentrations maintained the percentage of normal follicles similar to fresh control. At day 7 of culture, a higher percentage of developing follicles was observed only in 2.5ng/ml of progesterone associated with FSH or 10ng/ml of progesterone alone when compared with control. From day 1 to day 7 of culture, a significant increase in the percentage of developing follicles was observed in MEM and 2.5ng/ml of progesterone + FSH. In addition, after 7 days, in all treatments, there was a significant increase in follicular diameter when compared with control, except for MEM alone and in 5ng/ml of progesterone + FSH or 10ng/ml of progesterone alone. Ultrastructural studies confirmed follicular integrity after 7 days of culture in 2.5ng/ml of progesterone with FSH. In conclusion, this study demonstrated that the interaction between progesterone and FSH maintains ultrastructural integrity, stimulates primordial follicles activation and further growth of cultured caprine preantral follicles.


Este trabalho verificou os efeitos da progesterona e do hormônio folículo-estimulante (FSH) na sobrevivência e no crescimento de folículos pré-antrais caprinos. Fragmentos de tecido ovariano foram cultivados por 1 ou 7 dias em Meio Essencial Mínimo (MEM) sozinho ou contendo progesterona (1, 2.5, 5, 10 ou 20ng/mL), FSH (50ng/mL) ou a combinação entre esses dois hormônios. O tecido fresco (controle não-cultivado) e o cultivado foram processados para análise histológica e ultra-estrutural. Após 7 dias a adição de FSH a todas as concentrações de progesterone manteve o percentual de folículos normais similar ao controle fresco. No dia 7 de cultivo, um alto percentual de folículos em desenvolvimento foi observado somente no tratamento com 2,5ng/ml de progesterona associada ao FSH ou com 10ng/ml de progesterona sozinha, em relação ao controle fresco. Do dia 1 para o dia 7 de cultivo, um aumento significativo no percentual de folículos em desenvolvimento foi observado no MEM sozinho e adicionado de 2,5ng/ml de progesterona + FSH. Além disso, após 7 dias, em todos os tratamentos, houve um aumento significativo no diâmetro folicular em relação ao controle, exceto nos tratamentos com MEM sozinho, 5ng/ml de progesterona + FSH ou 10ng/ml de progesterona sozinha. A análise ultra-estrutural confirmou a integridade follicular após 7 dias de cultivo no tratamento com 2,5ng/ml de progesterona + FSH. Em conclusão, este estudo demonstrou que a interação entre progesterona e FSH mantém a integridade ultra-estrutural, estimula a ativação de folículos primordiais e o posterior crescimento de folículos pré-antrais caprinos cultivados in vitro.
